Dzikwa Trust metsäprojekti

Dzikwa Trustilla on myös metsäprojekti, jonka tarkoitus on tuottaa ruokaa ja polttopuita yhteisölle sekä suojella alueen luontoa. 60 hehtaarin alueella on mm. taimitarha, hunajantuotantoa, hedelmätarha ja eukalyptuksen istutusta polttopuiksi. Myös paikallisia viljelijöitä koulutetaan peltometsäviljelyn asiantuntijoiksi.

Binduran yliopistosta, joka on Hararen ulkopuolella, on täällä kuusi kandiopiskelijaa, jotka työskentelevät metsäalueella eri projekteissa 11kk. Clever vastaa taimitarhasta, Ronald hedelmätarhasta ja mehiläisistä, Tracy taimien markkinoimisesta, Forgetin alaa on biombometsä ja GIS, Kuda on keskittynyt peltometsäviljelyyn ja Joseph vastaa kumipuun istutuksesta. Aamupäivisin he ovat metsässä oman projektinsa parissa ja iltapäivällä he voivat keskittyä lopputyöhönsä, jota samalla tekevät omasta projektistaan. Tällä viikolla pääsin osallistumaan kahteen heidän kokoukseensa, jotka pidettiin metsässä olkikattoisen katoksen alla.

Omaa alaani täällä on hedelmäpuut. Tarkoituksena on kierrellä Dzivarasekwan alueella ihmisten puutarhoissa haastattelemassa heitä. Otan selvää mm. mitä hedelmäpuita he kasvattavat, miten he sadon käyttävät ja mitä muita puita he olisivat valmiita kasvattamaan ja syömään. Tätä tietoa voi sitten jatkossa hyödyntää yhteisössä ja projektialueella. Hedelmäpuut kun ovat erittäin tärkeä ravinnonlähde. Monilla täällä ei ole varaa ostaa hedelmiä ja siksi olisi hyvä, jos ihmisillä olisi omasta takaa hedelmäpuita.

Haastatteluja kanssani tekee Joseph, joka on Binduran yliopistosta. Hän toimii tarvittaessa tulkkina ja hän tietää muutenkin enemmän paikallisesta kulttuurista kuin minä. Se, että yksin ulkomaalaisena lähtisin haastattelemaan ihmisiä, ei välttämättä tuottaisi toivottavaa tulosta. Tällä viikolla kävimme tekemässä jo koehaastattelut ja ne sujuivat hyvin. Yhdessä talossa koko perhe eli yhdeksän ihmistä oli paikalla kuuntelemassa haastattelua. Toisessa talossa taas meille tarjottiin lounas, kun en ollut vielä tarpeeksi päässyt kuulemma maistamaan paikallisia ruokia. Hetken mietin kuinka uskaltaa syödä tarjottua ruokaa, kun en yhtään tiennyt milloin se oli valmistettu ja millaisissa olosuhteissa. En kuitenkaan kehdannut kieltäytyä tarjouksesta.

Ensi viikolla alkaakin sitten iso urakka, kun aloitan itse haastattelut. Niiden tekemiseen on varattu koko lokakuu. Lokakuu on koko vuoden kuumin kuukausi täällä, joten voin heti alkuunsa vuodattaa muutaman hikipisaran gradun takia..

Metsäprojektialueella kasvaa muuten monia herkkuja. Pääsin jo maistamaan ah niin herkullisia mulbereita sekä mansikoita!

Dzikwa Trust forestry project

Dzikwa Trust has also a forestry project here in Dzivarasekwa. Their mission is to contribute to climate mitigation, nature conservation and food security for the benefir of human well-being in this area. They have 60-hectare area of degraded land. There are many things going on, for example nursery, eucalyptus plantation for firewood, orchard, bees to produce honey and training farmers.

From Bindu University which is somewhere out of Harare, we have here 6 bachelor students who are working in the forestry area in different projects 11 months. Clever is responsible about the nursery, Ronald about orchard and apiculture, Tracy is marketing the products, Forget’s areas are GIS and miombo woodland, Kuda is working with the agroforestry and Joseph is planting the gum trees. During the mornings they are working in the forest and during afternoons they can concentrate to theiir attachments in the activity center. This week I was in two forestry meetings under a traditional wood building.

I’m interested in fruit trees here. My aim is to interview locals who have homegarden here in Dzivarasekwa. I will find out what fruit trees they are growing, how they use the yield and what other trees they would be ready to grow and eat. This can then benefit the community and forestry project in the future. Fruits are very important part of nutrition. Many people here don’t have so much money to buy fruits so it would be good if people would grow more fruit trees.

I’m interviewing people with Joseph who is from Bindura university. He is my interpreter and knows also more about the culture than I do. I think it wouldn’t be very fruitful if I as a foreigner would try to interview the people alone. This week we already did the test interviews and they went well. In one place the whole family, 9 people, was there when we did the interview. In one other place the woman offered us lunch. I was thinking a while if I should eat it or not but I didn’t want to be impolite.

Next week starts the big project when I start the real interviews. We need whole October to do them all. October is the hottest month of the year so I can immediately sweat because of my thesis..

There are btw growing many delicious things in the forestry area. I already tasted strawberries and very good mulberries!
