In Dzivarasekwa

Nyt on vierehtänyt jo neljä yötä Hararessa. Ensimmäisen yön vietin Oilin ja Sepon tykönä, jotka tekevät työtä Zimbabwen Aids-Orpojen hyväksi. Heillä oli oikein kiva koti isolla puutarhalla ja uima-altaalla. Sillä alueella kaikki talot olivat muurien sisäpuolella. Kävimme koirien kanssa kävelyllä seuraavana päivä, kadut olivat todella hiljaisia ja talot näyttivät kivoilta. Myös Oilin ystävä Virpi tuli samana päivänä minun kanssani parin viikon visiitille tänne. Lisäksi ekana päivänä tapasin pari suomalaista, jotka asuvat vallan täällä.

Sitten olikin aika astua todelliseen maailmaan ja lähteä Dzivarasekwaan. Muureilla suojatut talot vaihtuivat vähitellen tavalliseen vaatimattomiin taloihin ja päällystämättömiin katuihin. Ihmisiä kulki paljon kaduilla ja monet myivät jotakin kadunkulmissa. Täällä työllisyystilanne on tällä hetkellä todella huono, joten monen ainoa keino ansaita rahaa on myydä ruokaa tai tavaroita kaduilla. Alue on noin 16 km kaupungin keskustasta ja paikallinen ”ghetto”. Silti oikein viihtyisän oloinen. Pala todellista Afrikkaa!

Itse asun Shelterissä, joka on aivan toimintakeskuksen vieressä. Meitä asuu talossa yhteensä 11, minä tällä hetkellä ainoana ulkomaalaisena.  Minulla on oma huone, joka on oikein viihtyisä nyt, kun olen levittänyt kaikki tavarani ympäriinsä. Lisäksi meillä on olohuone/ruokailuhuone, suihku, 3 vessaa ja sekä tietysti keittiö. Keittiössä on sekä sähkö- että kaasuliesi. Toista käytetään silloin kun sähköt toimivat ja toista, kun ne ei toimi. Tähän mennessä sähköt ovatkin olleet jo aika paljon poissa, joten auringossa ladattava lamppu on tullut tarpeeseen. Talo on erittäin vaatimaton, mutta silti viihtyisä. Lisäksi meillä on pieni betonilla päällystetty piha, jota kiertää muuri ja sen päällä vielä piikkilanka.

Itse toimintakeskus on todella kiva paikka. Lapsia täällä käy melkein 400 ja lisäksi vapaaehtoisia sekä töissä olevia. Lapset, jotka ovat päässeet ohjelmaan mukaan voivat tulla toimintakeskukselle ennen ja jälkeen koulun. Täällä he saavat tukiopetusta, lounaan sekä voivat osallistua erilaisiin liikunta- tai kulttuurikerhoihin, heille järjestetään myös terveydenhuolto. Kummit vastaavat lisäksi koulunkäynnin tukemisesta. Keskuksella riittää siis vilinää ja vilskettä, kun hymyilevät koululaiset tulevat tänne.

Ryhdyimme ystävieni Heidin, Javin, Niinan ja Tuulin kanssa myös kummeiksi ja tuemme 9-vuotiaan tytön koulunkäyntiä. Innolla odotan, että pääsen tapaamaan hänet ensi viikollaJ

Graduprojektistani kerron enemmän joku toinen kerta, senhän takia täällä ollaan.

Nyt valmistaudun konserttiin, johon menen julkisilla kulkuneuvoilla, ensimmäistä kertaa. Katsotaan kuinka jännittävä iltapäivä tulee!:) 

In Dzivarasekwa

I have now spent already four nights here in Zimbabwe. Oili and Seppo who are living half of the year here in Harare and working in Aids-Orphans center were at the airport when I arrived. Also Oili’s friend Virpi came at the same day with me. First night I spent at their house. Their house is very nice with a big garden and swimming pool. In that area big walls are surrounding all the houses. So streets were very quiet and everything looked nice. That day we met already couple of other finns who are living in Zimbabwe.

After sleeping super well was a time to go to my real life here. We drove through the streets which were full of houses with the walls. But slowly came to an area with normal small houses and roads without cover. Lots of people were on the streets selling something. The employment situation is very poor here in Harare at the moment. That’s why selling some food or other stuff in the streets is the only way for many people to earn money. Dzivarasekwa is situated about 16km from the citycenter and i a local ”ghetto”. But anyway very nice. A piece of real Africa!

I’m living at the Shelter, which is next to the activity center. We are 11 people living there and I’m the only foreigner at the moment. I have a room which is very nice when I have put all my stuff around the room. Some people are sharing a room and some have own one. Then we have also living/dining room, shower, 3 toilets and of course kitchen. In the kitchen is two cookers, other one working with electricity and other one with gas. Other one we use when we have electricity and other one when we don’t have. Until now electricity has been off quite often. Luckily I brought with me a very good solar panel lamp! The house is simple but very cosy at the same time. We also have a small concrete yard surrounded by wall.

The activity center is very nice place. Almost 400 children come here and then here are some people working and many volunteers. Children who are part of the program can come here before or after the school. Here they get some extra lessons, lunch and can go to different sport or cultural clubs.  They also get health care and also the sponsors pay the school fees. It’s a very lively and happy place when all the smiling children come here.

I will tell more about my thesis project some other time. That’s why I came here!

Now I will get ready to go to one concert. First time I will use the public transport. Going to be exciting!:)
